Over its 65 years of existence, the Rolex Submariner went through several changes since its initial introduction in 1953, while always staying true to its original, recognisable design. The Rolex Submariner has become an icon in its own right and several vintage references and versions have become increasingly collectable over the past decades.

One of the most significant changes that the Submariner saw over the years, was the introduction of a date window with a cyclops for certain references. This change was first put in place on the reference 1680.

Although this model was available for a decade, early pieces easily differentiate themselves from later versions through the red highlighted ‘Submariner’ signature on the dial. Enthusiasts classified that highly sought-after characteristic as the ‘Red Submariner’. Different variations, so called Marks of these dials can be differentiated through slight variations of the graphics or fonts that were used.

This particular example is a Mark V, feet first dial, distinguishable through the two slightly open 6s printed underneath the red ‘Submariner’ signature. The Mark V dial can be found on pieces with a serial number starting with 2 or 3 million which is matching the case of the present lot. The bezel has faded to an attractive light grey/green colour which beautifully juxtaposes with the black dial.

The reference 1680 certainly was a historical landmark for the Rolex Submariner and this present lot perfectly embodies it as well as including features that appeal to vintage collectors.
