In the golden era of early aviation in the 1920s and 1930s, Longines was the watch most often worn by pilots and explorers. The main reason for this was the technical innovation of the firm, most notably the Hour Angle watch. Considering the Earth will make one rotation of 360 degrees, a 12-hour dial is a useful tool for dividing up that distance over time. With the use of the inner rotating dial and the outer rotating bezel, an aviator could use the hands of the watch to effectively pinpoint his location on (or above) the globe.
In 1987, Longines produced the present commemorative edition of the Hour Angle watch to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Lindbergh's flight across the Atlantic.
