The paper sheet is flat in the mount. The paint surface may be a little discoloured. There is a very minor surface abrasion/crease to the paper close to the lower edge but this is only visible upon very close inspection. Unexamined out of the frame.

An unfinished watercolour version for the present picture was exhibited in the Last Romantics exhibition at the Barbican Art Gallery in 1989. The landscape was based upon Minchinhampton Common, close to Payne's home in Amberley near Stroud.
