WILLIAM POWELL FRITH, R.A.
Juliet, "O that I were a Glove upon that Hand"
signed and dated l.r.: W.P. Frith 1862
oil on canvas
76 by 63.5 by 63.5cm., 30 by 25in.
The canvas has been lined and is providing a stable, structural support. There is a very fine craquelure pattern visible upon close inspection in the darker shadows behind the figure.
The work appears in excellent overall condition.
Under ultraviolet light there are fine infillings of retouching to the girl's dress; to her face, hands and hair. There may be some other retouchings in the dark background behind Juliet - the varnish is slightly opaque and difficult to read conclusively.
Contained in an elaborate, gilt plaster frame; probably the original.
