Description

VERY FINE GREEN-PAINTED CONTINUOUS-ARM WINDSOR ARMCHAIR, JOHN ALWAYS AND JOSEPH HAMPTON, NEW YORK, CIRCA 1795-6

appears to retain its original green paint; the underside of seat branded I. ALW/ I. HAMTON.

Height 36 ½ in.

Marguerite Riordan, Stonington, Connecticut.

This well-proportioned armchair was made by John Alway and Joseph Hampton, who were in partnership for less than two years (see Nancy Goyne Evans, American Windsor Chairs, (New York: Hudson Hill Press, 1996), p. 199). It remarkably retains a majority of its original green paint.
