ENGLISH SCHOOL, 19TH CENTURY

GROUP OF FAMILY PORTRAITS OF RICHARD AND ANNE WINNIATT AND CHILDREN JOHN AND LOWISA

watercolor on paper

circa 1840-1845

Each 9 ¼ by 7 ¼ in.

the verso of each respectively inscribed:

Richard Winniatt / Born Grabvesend, England / Died in Bristol [...] 1840

Ann Winniatt wife of Richard

Lowisa Winniatt / ABOUT 1843/ (married John T. Griffiths of Bristol, England) / Mother of Edith Griffiths who married Charles Walworth Webster of Boston, Mass. 1892

John Winniatt at 1845 [...] Born Gravesend, England / Died Boston, Mass.

Descended in the Winniatt family;

Private collection;

Martin J. Conlon American Antiques, Providence, Rhode Island.

The Winniatt family were likely painted near their hometown of Gravesend, England, given that the father, Richard, died in Bristol, and John and Lowisa would not have emigrated to the United States independently as children. John Winniatt or the daughter of Lowisa, probably brought these portraits to Boston as family heirlooms in the second half of the 19th century.
