FIRST EDITION, 8 volumes, 4to (330 x 240mm.), 409 mounted albumen prints only (mostly 230 x 165mm., and smaller), comprising 359 (of 480) numbered photographs and 50 duplicates, various sizes, nearly all one to a page, volumes 1, 2, 7 and 8 with the full complement of photographs, nearly all the photographs present with accompanying descriptive text, volume 1 in contemporary half morocco, volumes 2, 7 and 8 in original cloth, the other volumes disbound, lacking 121 photographs and some titles and text, all contents loose (gutta percha perished), some fading, occasional spotting, some edges slightly chipped, sold as a collection of photographs not subject to return
RARE. Only one complete set of this work of photograph portraits has been sold at auction in the past 20 years. The present set contains the next largest collection of photographs from this work to appear at auction in the same period.
