Description
GREECE AND THE LEVANT, A PRIVATE LIBRARY, LOTS 157-213
STACKELBERG, OTTO MAGNUS VON
Costumes & usages des peuples de la Grèce moderne. Paris: P. Marino, [c.1830]
4to (340 x 250mm.), lithographed title and 30 hand-coloured plates, numbered 1-30 with captions in French, mounted (varying in size from c.290 x 210mm. to 240 x 180mm.), bound with 2 additional hand-coloured lithographed plates, modern green morocco by Zaehnsdorf, top edge gilt, 3 plates with some spotting (no. 14, 16 and 23), spine faded
This is one of the pirated editions that Blackmer suggests drove Stackelberg in 1831 to reprint his work in a German edition: Trachten und Gebräuche der Neugriechen (though Colas suggests a date of publication for our edition as later, c.1835). It varies from the other editions in that the plates are lithographed (printed by Senefelder), not engraved.

cf. Blackmer 1591 (footnote); Colas 2791; Lipperheide 1449
