Description

GREECE AND THE LEVANT, A PRIVATE LIBRARY, LOTS 157-213

NICOLAY, NICOLAS DE

Les navigations peregrinations et voyages, faicts en la Turquie. Antwerp: Guilluame Silvius, 1576 (1577)

Second French edition, 4to (191 x 136mm.), title within typographical border and with a small device at foot, 60 full-page woodcuts in the text, twentieth century specked calf by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, B6 very slightly cropped, occasional minor marginal dampstaining

A VERY GOOD COPY. Nicolay was the royal geographer sent by Henri II to Constantinople to join d'Aramon's embassy in 1551. The wooducuts are among the earliest representations of the inhabitants of Algiers, Tripoli, the Barbary Coast, Turkey, Greece, Persia and Armenia. Together with Le Hay's Recueil de cent estampes (1714), Nicolay's work forms "the prototype for Levantine costume plates" (Atabey 429).
