Cañes was a Franciscan missionary in Damascus and the aim of this publication was the conversion to Christianity of the local Arabic-speaking peoples, although Cañes does make philological observations on the influence of Arabic on Spanish and on the usefulness of Arabic for the study of Biblical languages.
