Related by marriage to the fish painter Pieter de Putter (circa 1600–59), van Beyeren was also best known as a pre-eminent painter of this genre.


The basket with pike perch and salmon steak also occur in the still life, signed and dated 1664, in the Bengt-Rapp collection, Stockholm,[1] and in that in the collection of the Rijksdienst Beeldende Kunst.[2]
