AN ILLUMINATED MINIATURE QUR’AN, COPIED BY ABU AL-QASIM B. ZAYAN AL-'ABIDIN AL-KHAWANSARI, PERSIA, QAJAR, DATED 1277 AH/1860-61 AD


Arabic manuscript on paper, 221 leaves plus 2 fly-leaves, 20 lines to the page, written in naskh in black ink within clouds against a gold ground, ruled in black and gold, verses separated by gold and polychrome rosettes, surah headings in red riqa against a gold ground within cartouches, gold and polychrome verse markers in the margins, f.1b and f.2a with a double page with prayers within gold outlined trees, f.2b and 3a with a double page of illumination, f.3b and f.4a with a gold and polychrome floral border, in lacquer binding decorated with flowers

leaf: 11.6 by 7.3cm.

Condition Report

The margins are clean, minor stains and smudges but overall the writing clean and clear, minor losses to the illuminations and minor restorations to the paper, the lacquer binding with minor losses and scratches, as viewed.
