AN ILLUMINATED COLLECTION OF SURAHS AND PRAYERS, COPIED BY MEHMED HILMI EFENDI, TURKEY, OTTOMAN, 19TH CENTURY
Arabic manuscript on cream paper, 149 leaves plus 2 fly-leaves, 11 lines to the page, written in naskh in black ink, ruled in gold, verses separated by polychrome and gold roundels of different design, titles and surah headings in red cursive within gold and polychrome cartouches, f.2b, f.137b and f.140b with a polychrome and gold heading (‘unwan), several hilyehs including one of the Prophet, Abu Bakr, ‘Umar, Uthman, ‘Ali, Hasan, Husain and Talha, in dark red gilt and stamped binding, with flap

Mehmed Hilmi (d.1900-01), was originally from the city of Ermenak and was active in Istanbul in the second half of the nineteenth century. Student of the grand Sufi calligraphy master Kadiasker Mustafa Izzet Efendi, he also served in the Office of the Sheikh al-Islam and became the religious representative of the Sherif of Mecca in Istanbul. A calligraphic muraqqa' copied by Mehmed Hilmi was offered in these rooms, 24 October 2018, lot 30. At the end of the volume there are thirteen leaves of prayers written by a different hand.
