JOHN HOSKINS | PORTRAIT OF A LADY
Wells, Somerset ? c. 1590 - 1665 London
PORTRAIT OF A LADY
Watercolour and bodycolour on vellum, gold frame, with black enamel reverse, black and white enameled scroll surmount;
signed with the artist's initials and dated lower right: 1649. / IH.
65 by 54 mm.
Skin tones probably a little faded but a portrait of extraordinary presence. The gold border in the sky area has been over painted with blue. Whether this was by the artist or a later adjustment is uncertain. There is very minor loss of the black dress at 5 o'clock near the margin. There are firing irregularities on the back of the enamel.
