The sitter was the son of Louis Nicolas Davout, Marshal of France, and his wife, Louise Aimée Julie Leclerc. In 1823 he succeeded to his father's titles becoming the 2nd Duc d'Auerstaedt and Prince d'Eckmühl, titles which became extinct upon his own death.
