The sitter was the son of Louis Nicolas Davout, Marshal of France, and his wife, Louise Aimée Julie Leclerc. In 1823 he succeeded to his father's titles becoming the 2^nd Duc d'Auerstaedt and Prince d'Eckmühl, titles which became extinct upon his own death.
