The sitter descended from an ancient and noble Dutch family. He had known Prince William of Orange since his youth and was sent to England to secure the hand of Princess Mary in 1677. After James II was overthrown, Bentinck served William and Mary as a Privy councilor. He was granted great estates and the titles Baron Cirencester, Viscount Woodstock and Earl of Portland.
