The identity of the sitter is confirmed by a copy of this portrait made in circa 1575 for Ferdinand II, Archduke of Austria (Vienna, KHM, inv. GG 4876). The Duke was descended from an illegitimate branch of the French royal family. He had a short but brilliant military career and was created prince du sang in 1571.
'Ordinary' painter to Mary Queen of Scots and to Charles IX, Jean de Court succeeded François Clouet in 1572 as the official portraitist to the Valois family. We are grateful to Alexandra Zvereva for her help when cataloguing this lot.
