Born in France, Charles Joseph Frédéric Soulacroix studied at the École de Beaux-Arts in Paris and shortly after began exhibiting at the Salon des Artistes Français, though he would eventually settle in Florence. He is celebrated for painting sumptuous upholstery and draperies with meticulous detail. In Soulacroix’s elegant interiors, which are always decorated with silks, velvets, flowers and Directoire furniture garnished with ormolu, précieuses and élégantes meet for an afternoon tea, play games or discuss the latest gossip. His compositions harken back to the Directoire and Napoleon’s rule, which preceded Soulacroix’s day.
