This is one of a number of editions of The Manual Exercise or The New Manual Exercise published in Britain and the colonies around the time of the outbreak of the American War of Independence (1775-1783). George Washington’s Continental Army and the American Parliament declared independence from British rule in 1776; once news of this spread to Jamaica a series of slave revolts ensued, including back-to-back revolts in the parishes of Hanover and St James in 1776 and 1777.
