Two late sixteenth-century works bound together, comprising:

i. P., T. Of the knowledge and conducte of warres, two bookes, latelye wrytten and sett foorth, profitable for suche as delight in hystoryes, or martyall affayres, and necessarye for this present tyme. ii. Ive, Paul. The practise of fortification: wherein is shewed the manner of fortifying in all sortes of situations, with all kindes of materials. Corrected and augmented. London: printed by Felix Kingston for Toby Cooke, 1597, mostly black letter, 16 engraved illustrations (including 12 full-page, one of which is pasted in), owner's name on title cropped "George Cate... 159...", [ESTC S93329 (4 copies); STC 14290; cf. Cockle 41-42], a few illustrations cropped

2 works in one volume, small 4to (190 x 138mm.), nineteenth-century half calf, rubbed, label chipped

This first work is attributed to Thomas Proctor, though possibly not the poet Thomas Proctor. There are no copies recorded at auction in over 40 years. The second work was also issued as part 2 of the Baron de Fourquevaux's Instructions for the warres, 1589 (see lot 185). BOTH WORKS ARE RARE.
