Styward's practical work was drawn from various foreign sources, "these my collections, gathered from most excellent souldiers, as Italian, Germaine, Swizzers, French, and English" (preface). He discusses the training of the infantry and their use on the battlefield.

A variant of this edition has the printer’s name given as "T.E." and not "T. East".
