Freitag (1608-1650), a Polish engineer and doctor, had studied in Germany and served in the army of the Prince of Orange before dying in Lithuania in the service of Prince Radizwill. This work on fortification, first published in Latin in 1631 by the Elzevirs, became the manual of the Dutch school of fortification. It was also translated into German in 1635 (Willems 424).
