This collection of plates is extracted from de Fer's Le forces de l'Europe, which consisted of 177 maps issued in eight parts. Phillips states that "pls. I-VIII relate to fortifications and have a special title-page, on the leaf following the general title-page of the atlas, reading, "Introduction a la fortification"... Each plate is accompanied by explanatory text".
