This view is of the westernmost colossus in front of the first pylon at the Temple of Luxor, Egypt. Taking some artistic licence, Clairin has here depicted the colossus standing rather than seated. The group of men to the right, comprising an artist, a French soldier and local guides, recall the Egyptomania prevalent in France through the nineteenth century, following Napoleon's expedition of 1798-1801.
