painted on each side with a cartouche of figures on a quayside, within puce-diaper borders embellished with iron-red and puce scrollwork flanked by sprays of indianische Blumen, affixed with a curved spout with mask terminal and a loop handle, the cover painted with a continuous harbor scene, crossed swords mark in underglaze-blue, gilded numeral 71. to both, incised / to inside rim of teapot
height 5¾ in.
There is a small restored chip to lower edge of teapot spout with some associated re-gilding. There is a minute flat chip to outer edge of rim of teapot and a slightly bigger flat chip which occurred during production and is glazed over. A minor patch of rubbing to gilding on both cartouches. A flake to gilding of finial and minor rubbing to edge of rim of cover.
Sotheby's Scientific Research department used noninvasive XRF for this lot to screen the green enamel for chromium, which was not detected.
