The figure is probably that mentioned in Kändler's Taxa or work record for September 1745: '1. Holländischer Bauer sizend und Taback rauchend...' A similar figure with the companion seamstress from the Franz Burda Collection is illustrated in Melitta Kunze-Köllensperger, Collection Franz E. Burda, Augsburg, 1997, nos. 82-83.


Sotheby’s Scientific Research department used noninvasive XRF for this lot to screen the green enamel for chromium, which was not detected.
