THE COLLECTION OF MELINDA AND PAUL SULLIVAN
A MEISSEN FIGURE OF A DUTCHMAN
CIRCA 1745
modeled by Johann Friedrich Eberlein, holding a pipe with a tobacco pouch on his right knee, seated on a tasseled cushion with a handled cup or ashtray at his feet, the mound base applied with flowers, crossed swords mark in underglaze-blue

The figure is probably that mentioned in Kändler's Taxa or work record for September 1745: '1. Holländischer Bauer sizend und Taback rauchend...' A similar figure with the companion seamstress from the Franz Burda Collection is illustrated in Melitta Kunze-Köllensperger, Collection Franz E. Burda, Augsburg, 1997, nos. 82-83.
Sotheby’s Scientific Research department used noninvasive XRF for this lot to screen the green enamel for chromium, which was not detected.
