Property from the Estate of John Bedford
FOLLOWER OF JEAN-BAPTISTE SANTERRE
PORTRAIT OF A LADY, THREE-QUARTER-LENGTH, IN A RED DRESS WITH A BLUE WRAP, HOLDING AN ORANGE BLOSSOM, AN ORANGE TREE IN THE LANDSCAPE BEYOND
oil on canvas
101.9 x 82 cm.; 40⅛ x 32¼ in.
The canvas is lined, the paint surface is slightly dirty and the varnish is slightly discoloured. A scuff and an associated loss in the background to the left of the sitter’s shoulder are visible to the naked eye - the G-shaped scratch approx. 11cm. long and the loss less than 1cm.; another small retouched loss is in the background just to the left of the sitter’s head, and another is found in the lower right corner. Small discoloured retouchings are also visible scattered through the sitter’s face and in her chest and dress across the horizontal stretcher mark. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals the opaque varnish, and the aforementioned retouchings, as well as some strengthening in the folds of the drapery, lower left, and scattered in the lower right corner and in the tree. The painting is in overall fair condition, which will respond well to cleaning.
