Condition Report

The canvas has a firm relining, the paint surface is relatively clean and the varnish is clear and streaky. A degree of wear is visible throughout. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals an opaque varnish and some small areas of apparent retouching which fluoresce lightly: around the legs of the chair, in the foreground beneath the trees, in the silhouette of the figure, and along the lower margin, notably in the lower right corner. Other small retouchings are just visible in the hat, in the sitter’s shins, his hand, in his left cheek, and around his jaw. Further patches occur in the upper left corner, along the upper margin and scattered in the distant background. In overall fair condition without an immediate need for further intervention.
