A PAIR OF SPANISH BAROQUE STYLE PIETRE DURE AND PARCEL-GILT WROUGHT IRON CONSOLE TABLES, THE TOPS AFTER THE BUEN RETIRO WORKSHOP

height 34 ½in.; width 52 ½in.; depth 22 in.

87.75 cm; 133.5 cm; 56 cm

Acquired through Geoffrey Bradfield, 1985

The tops are after a table supplied to King Charles III by the Buen Retiro Laboratorio de Piedras y Mosaico [Pietre Dure and Mosaic Workshop] in 1782, now in the Prado Museum (Álvar González-Palacios, Las colecciones reales españolas de mosaicos y piedras duras, Madrid 2001, no.29 p.177-79). The design was based on a trompe-l'oeil cartoon by the artist Charles-Jospeh Flipart. When Charles VII of Naples assumed the Spanish throne as Charles III in 1759, he transferred the Capodimonte porcelain factory to the Buen Retiro park in Madrid and also established a pietre dure and mosaic workshop, bringing in workers from Florence. The workshop was in operation until 1808 when it was destroyed by invading French troops.
