Part of a dynasty of Paris chair-makers, Jean-Nicolas Blanchard took over his brother Sylvain's workshop the in the rue de Cléry under the sign of the Chat Blanc in 1771. He was a supplier to Versailles and was particularly known for his armchairs produced in late Louis XV and Transitional styles of ample proportions. His work is represented in the Louvre and Carnavalet museums in Paris and the Gulbenkian Museum in Lisbon.
