Provenance

Louis Denempont (1892-1944) and Anne Denempont (1889-1954), and by descent

Catalogue Note

After moving to America and finding employment at Woolworth's in 1910, Louis Denempont returned to England and spearheaded the rapid growth of the vast network of Woolworth’s stores throughout the United Kingdom during the 1920's and 1930's. He was responsible for selecting over 700 store locations and could build a store from scratch in just seven weeks. He ascended to the company’s Board of Directors in the 1930's and to Managing Director in 1938, where he served with great distinction during the war. Significantly, under his leadership Woolworth's Ltd. established wartime policies to continue payment of full compensation and benefits to employees during their military service and donated £10,000 raised from employee and management contributions to pay for two Spitfire fighter aircraft named and marked in their honor.

Louis and Anne Denempont acquired this grand nef for their estate, Four Winds, in Weybridge, Surrey, England.
