Scotland 1757 - 1837 London
Dutch barges with figures on a beach; and A Dutch frigate and other vessels off a coast
both signed and dated: W. Anderson 1813, the former lower right, the latter lower left
a pair, both oil on metal
each 21.6 by 31.8cm.; 8½by 12 1/2in.
The former: the metal plate is flat and stable. The paint surface is relatively dirty, with a slightly discoloured varnish. A small number of tiny discoloured retouchings are visible scattered throughout. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms these and reveals further retouchings scattered along the left margin, an area beneath the left-most vessel (0.5 x 1 cm.), and in the face and neck of the figure seated on the bench. There also appears to be some wash retouching through the sky.
The latter: the metal plate is flat and stable. The paint surface is dirty and the varnish is also discoloured. There are a few discoloured, small spots and fine lines of discoloured retouching scattered throughout, most notably in the cloud, upper centre, as well as a handful of pinprick losses, notably in the central part of the water. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms these, and reveals some possible retouching along the lower margin, with a spot at the back of the rowing boat on the left. Similarly there may also be wash retouching in the sky, though this is difficult to discern beneath the uneven varnish.
The paintings are in overall good condition.
