PRINTS, MAPS AND DRAWINGS
A PORTFOLIO OF OVER OVER 100 PRINTS, MAPS AND DRAWINGS, MOSTLY 18TH AND 19TH CENTURY
various sizes (most from 200 x 300mm. to 590 x 850mm.), including engravings, lithographs and aquatints, and some original drawings and watercolours
This collection includes an engraved plan of Rome by Pirro Ligorio on 12 sheets (originally published by Tramezini in 1561, but a later (?18th century) reprint, a watercolour panorama of Brindisi by Henry Swinburne (dated May 1777); an engraved plan of Rome (1785); a group of 6 topographical engravings of Rome and Italy; 4 hand-coloured aquatints by Hassell after Walmsley, published by J. Brydon in 1800 (3 of the Lake District and a view near Limerick); an engraved plan of Venice (published by Teodoro Viero, 1816); 4 finished drawings (for lithographs) by Henry Barlow Carter (1804-1868) of Iona Cathedral (2), Staithes near Whitby and Scalby near Scarborough; a small group of lithographs by Carter (including 3 of Scarborough); a tinted lithograph of the SS Great Britain (slightly worn); an Ecclesiastical map of England and Wales by Daniel Grant (1851); a group of 13 portrait or costume sketches in pencil or charcoal, most signed with initials and dated in the 1860s; an engraved view of Stonyhurst; a group of 12 prints of sculptures by Canova; 3 prints after Pugin; 4 lithographs of Upton House, and over 30 other prints including a few of cathedrals, the others mostly religious subjects.
Henry Swinburne's granddaughter, Henrietta Sophia Benfield, married Robert Berkeley (1794-1874) on 24 January 1822. This would explain the prescence of the work by him in this group (also see lot 40)
