Description

POSSIBLY FRENCH OR ITALIAN, LATE 17TH CENTURY

Two Buttons now Mounted as Brooches

partially enamelled gold and silver gilt, set with seed pearls and semi precious stones

2.5cm., 1in. and 2.3cm.,⅞in.

The form of the brooches recalls 18th-century jewellery designs in the Biblioteca Nacional, Madrid, illustrated in P. Muller, Jewels in Spain 1500-1800, New York, 1972, p. 158, fig. 241.

Condition Report

Overall the condition of the brooches is good with dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. There are some chips and losses to the enamels, particularly to the less elaborate brooch. The pearls are probably original but it cannot be discounted that there could potentially be some replacements.
