MANNER OF GIOVANNI BELLINI
The Madonna and Child seated before a distant landscape
oil on panel
52.5 by 39cm.; 20¾by 15 3/8in.
The panel is uncradled and slightly uneven. Evidence of old woodworm is visible in the form of holes scattered throughout. The paint surface is very dirty and the varnish is discoloured. There are also small losses scattered throughout. Retouching is visible to the naked eye along the upper margin and through parts of the sky, as well as scattered in the Madonna’s face, her veil, her hand, and in the face and body of the Christ child. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms these. In overall moderate.
