MANNER OF FILIPPO LIPPI
The Madonna and Child with a pomegranate
oil on panel
76.2 by 47.2cm.; 30 by 18 5/8in.
The panel is uncradled, and very slightly bowed. There is evidence of old woodworm throughout the back of the panel. The paint surface is dirty and the varnish is discoloured. A number of losses are scattered along the left and right margins, in the Madonna’s face, around the head of the Christ Child, and in his ankle. The paint surface is lifting in the Child’s side and in the Madonna’s wrist and in her robe just above this, all of which should be consolidated. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals an extensive campaign of retouching through the Madonna’s face, neck, hands and robe, and throughout the figure of the Christ Child. There is strengthening in much of the gilt decoration of the Madonna’s robe and halo, as well as in her hair, and in the Child’s halo. Further retouchings are scattered in the background, most notably to an area to the left of the Madonna’s head (4 x 5 cm.), upper right. In overall moderate condition.
