London 1646 - 1691
Portrait of a gentleman, half-length, wearing purple robes
oil on canvas, in a painted oval
76.2 by 63.5cm.; 30 by 25in.
The canvas is lined, the paint surface is slightly dirty and the varnish is discoloured and rather matte. Inspection under ultraviolet light is somewhat impeded by the milky varnish but appears to reveal very little retouching save for perhaps some areas of strengthening in the folds of his sleeve on the left, and to a small loss in his white drapery lower left. In overall good condition.
