Schirra was one of the original seven astronauts chosen for the Mercury Program, the first to go into space three times, and the only astronaut to have flown in the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo programs. The Gemini 6 mission achieved the first crewed rendezvous with another spacecraft: Gemini 7.
