The Gemini 5 launched from the Kennedy Space Center on 21 August 1965, with Command Plot Gordon Cooper and Pilot Pete Conrad on board. Gemini 5 doubled the U.S space-flight record of Gemini 4 to eight days⁠—precisely the length of time it would take to fly to the Moon, land, and then return. The Gemini cabin was cramped (about the size of the front seat of Volkswagen Beetle), and Conrad⁠—who was known for always having a quip ready⁠—called the mission "Eight days in a garbage can."
