The Vintage NASA Photo Collection of Philip Kulpa

[APOLLO 11]

FIRST FOOTPRINT ON THE MOON. 20 JULY 1969.

Vintage NASA “Red Number” chromogenic color photograph, 10 by 8 inches, “A Kodak Paper” watermark to verso. NASA image ID “NASA AS11-40-5877” printed in upper left margin in red; minor wear to corners, manuscript caption to verso in blue ink.

Buzz Aldrin left this bootprint in the lunar soil at Tranquillity Base on 20 July 1969. The impression, which was about about 2.5 centimetres (1 inch) deep, demonstrated the cohesiveness and fineness of the lunar soil.
