The inclusion of the Roman numerals 'XXV' on the diamond-set mount of this brooch suggest it relates to known examples of anniversary jewels made by Fabergé and was presumably commissioned to commemorate a twenty-fifth wedding anniversary.
Other related examples include an amethyst brooch mounted with a diamond-set 'XX' between the initials of Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich and Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna beneath an Imperial crown (see exhibition catalogue, Fabergé and the Russian Jewellers, London, Wartski, 2006, p.59, no. 175).
