ARNOLD BORISOVICH LAKHOVSKY
Male Portrait, Dar es Salaam
signed over an earlier signature and inscribed Dar es Salaam in Latin and indistinctly dated l.l.; further bearing a 1932 salon label and stamp on the stretcher
oil on canvas
112 by 77cm, 44 by 30¼in.
Original canvas on its original stretcher. There is a faint stretcher bar mark running through the centre and an area of buckling just below the sitter's red belt. Craquelure is visible in places, some of which is lifting but appears stable presently. There is a small area of paint loss inside the sitter's left elbow. Scattered pinholes are visible to the edges in places and there are frame abrasions with associated minor paint loss. There is a layer of surface dirt. Inspection under UV light reveals a further overpainted signature by the artist to the left of the railings in the bottom right. Framed in a gold painted wooden frame. Unexamined out of frame.
