From an inscription of the back of the frame the sitters are identified as The Earl of Milltown and Mr. Henry of Straffan, due to their likeness to the sitters in an oil painting by Sir Joshua Reynolds, now in the National Gallery of Ireland. A copy after Reynolds' painting in the National Gallery of Ireland is being offered in this sale as lot 57.
