METAMORPHOSIS II (B./K./L./W. 320)
Woodcut printed in red and black, 1939-40, signed in pencil, a rare impression (the final edition was printed in black, green and brown), on joined sheets of thin Japan, framed
sheet: 192 by 4000 mm 7½ by 157½ in
The print is in good condition apart from three small tears in the upper sheet edge, the longest skillfully repaired and extending 1 3/4 inches into the image at far left, a tiny loss in the upper left sheet corner, and a minuscule hole in the lower margin below the red birds. A 9 inch diagonal crease in the chessboard at right. The sheet is faintly toned and the red is occasionally not saturated and very slightly attenuated overall.
