GEORGES BRAQUE
1882 - 1963
FOX (VALLIER 6)
Drypoint, 1911, printing with plate tone, signed in pencil, numbered no. 49, from the total edition of 100, published in 1912 by D.-H. Kahnweiler, on Arches laid paper, framed
plate: 546 by 381mm 21½ by 15in
sheet: 648 by 495mm 25½ by 19½in
One of only ten Cubist prints created by Braque, café still life Fox depicts the Parisian-English pub favoured by Paris’ painters and poets. Stylised text spelling “Old Tom Gin” suggests the clientele’s drink of choice, while the subtle inclusion of a playing card with a heart hints at the lively atmosphere. Commissioned by famed print collector and art dealer Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler in 1911, Fox was published instantly, while most of his remaining Cubist intaglio works were not released until after the Museum of Modern Art’s 1948 Braque retrospective.
