NORTH CAROLINA 4
flush-mounted to Masonite, with '38 [circled] New York 1949 8 20' in ink on masking tape on the reverse, 1951 (Aaron Siskind 100, unpaginated)
13 by 10¼ in. (33 by 26 cm.)
This warm-toned photograph is mounted to Masonite. As is often seen in photographs mounted to Masonite, the print surface exhibits some craquelure overall and there are occasional attendant losses.
Scattered deposits of indeterminate nature as well as tiny deposits of original retouching are visible upon close inspection. There is edge wear and chipping, the corners are bumped, and there are several small areas where the print is lifting from the mount. Faint silvering is visible in raking light.
On the reverse, adhesive remnants and darkened strips suggest that hanging brackets were previously affixed. This was standard presentation for Siskind's exhibition prints from the period. The full annotation on the masking tape reads as follows: '38 [circled] New York 1949 8 20.' Another small piece of masking tape is adhered along the lower edge with illegible notations in ink.
