SELECTED IMAGES OF KENYAN WILDLIFE

Various sizes to 13 by 19⅜ in. (33 by 23.8 cm.)

Condition Report

These early, inscribed gelatin silver prints are in generally fair to good condition. The following are visible to some degree on each print: creases (some of which break the emulsion), faint scratches, adhesive residue, tape remnants in the margins, margin edge and corner wear with some minor chipping, and soft impressions. Some of the margins are unevenly trimmed. As is typical of the photographer's working process, there are stains, stray ink, and fingerprints on the reverse of each print.

Additional condition notes, dimensions, and inscriptions are as follows:

Gerenuk: 13 by 19 1/4 in.

There is a long crease with several associated short creases that appear to break the emulsion in the upper left quadrant. A second crease runs parallel to the left edge at the upper left corner. 'Gerenuk on the Tiva R. / 1965 / Regards, Peter Beard' is written in black ink at the center left of the image. 'MA019' is written in an unidentified hand in pencil on the reverse.

Walking Elephant: 12 7/8 by 19 in.

There are numerous tape remnants, yellowing adhesive residue, abrasions, fingerprints, smudges, handling creases and tack holes in each corner. 'To Michael from Africa (Tiva River . . . Kenya) All Best, Peter (Beard) 1965' is inscribed in black ink in the lower left corner.

Elephant (Front View): 19 1/4 by 12 7/8 in.

There is a large horizontal scratch that appears to break the emulsion in the upper left corner and several creases extending from the center left margin edge into the image slightly. This image appears to be slightly yellowed. There are tape remnants, glue residue and abrashions in each corner. 'For Jonathan / all best wishes / & Saalams, Peter (Beard) / Nairobi 1972' is written in black ink at center left. 'B220 / 34A' is written in an unidentified hand in pencil on the reverse.

Elephant (Side View): 16 1/4 by 10 3/4 in.

There are several smudges (possible stray paint or ink) in the sky area. There are a few charcoal-colored smudges in the upper right corner and some above the elephant's head in the sky. 'To Sharon: [three drawn hearts] Peter (Beard) N. F. D. Kenya 1962' is written in black ink in the lower left corner. 'B220 / 5A' is written in pencil on the reverse.

Elephant with Tusks Raised: 16 1/4 by 10 3/4 in.

There are some brown liquid drips in the lower left and upper left margin corners, a smudge in the upper right margin corner, and a crease in the lower center margin that extends slightly into the image and may break the emulsion. 'Kenya (N. F. D. ). . . for Cooper Hewitt' and 'Regards, Peter Beard.' is written in black ink in the white margin.
