HOD CARRIER (HANDLANGER)
the photographer’s 'Aug. Sander Köln–Lindenthal’ blindstamp on the image, on a modern mount, framed, circa 1927, printed by Gunther Sander from his father's negative circa 1965
11⅝ by 9⅞ in. (29.5 by 25.1 cm.)
This print, on semi-glossy paper, is in generally good condition. This photograph exhibits a full range of tones, from the inky black of the background to the dusty white highlights on the bricks. Upon close examination, there is a small irregular area along the right edge where the photographer retouched the negative to darken the composition's background for a more striking presentation. There is small area on the subject's vest that appears matte in raking light and may be an area refabricated during conservation by Jose Orraca in 1987. The print was removed from its original mount and drymounted to a modern mount at that time. A treatment report is available by request.
When examining the print closely, the following are visible: faint scuffs; shallow vertical cracks in several areas, many of which appear to break the emulsion slightly; a few small disruptions in the surface; and a faint scratch in the upper left quadrant. There are cracks of varying length near the right edge of the image and along the perimeter, as well as faint craquelure in the lower right quadrant.
When examined under ultraviolet light, this print appears to very faintly fluoresce.
