Description

HARRY CALLAHAN

1912-1999

CHICAGO (WINDOWS AND FIRE ESCAPE)

flush-mounted to thick board, annotations in pencil and a 'Museum of Modern Art Study Collection' stamp on the reverse, 1949

7½ by 9½ in. (19.1 by 24.1 cm.)

Condition Report

This early print, flush-mounted to thick board, is in generally very good condition. The print is trimmed to the image and the edges are worn with occasional tiny chipping of the emulsion that appears to have been retouched. The following are visible upon close inspection: a small hairline scratch at the lower left corner and a handful of scattered small creases, some of which may break the emulsion. When examined in raking light the following are visible: a tiny impression in the left portion of the image; and one or 2 tiny raised areas are visible at the center, likely particles trapped between the print and mount during the mounting process.

The print is hinged to a mat, so that the reverse can not be fully inspected. 'Harry Callahan, (bdlg, diagonal firescape)' is written in pencil in an unidentified hand on the reverse. The mount is stamped: 'Study Collection / Photography Department / Museum of Modern Art, N.Y.'
