Property from a Private American Collection
'CHIMNEY SWEEP, LONDON' (B)
platinum-palladium print, signed, titled, dated, editioned '12/27,' and annotated in pencil and stamped on the reverse, framed, 1950, printed in 1976 (Small Trades, pl. 20)
19⅜ by 14¾ in. (49.2 by 37.5 cm.)
This platinum-palladium print is in generally excellent condition. The margins are warm at the edges of the image, possibly a result of processing.
On the reverse of the print, the annotations in pencil are: 'P 1306' (circled), 'Platinum-palladium,' and 'print made July 1976.' There is also an illegible notation in pencil at the upper right corner on the reverse. The stamps read 'Hand-coated by the photographer,' 'Deacidified,' and 'Photograph by Irving Penn Copyright [1951 in pencil] by The Conde Nast Publications Ltd. Not to be reproduced without written permission of the copyright owner.'
The edition stamp on the reverse indicates that in addition to the 27 numbered prints in platinum metals, there may also exist no more than 4 unnumbered, but signed, silver prints.
The overall tonality of this rich platinum-palladium print is more neutral than in the catalogue illustration.
